Challenge
Many plastic add-on parts made of polypropylene can traditionally only be coated after flame treatment. However, this is often not possible in existing coating systems – for example due to ATEX zones, increased safety risks or the inability to retrofit. In addition, manual flame treatment regularly causes variations in adhesion and significantly reduces process reliability.
- Flame treatment often not feasible in existing systems (ATEX zones, safety)
- Variations in adhesion with manual flame treatment
- Low process reliability in series production
- High investment requirements for new plant equipment
- Suitability for OEM approval as a mandatory requirement
Solution
KSK developed chemical activation using a special primer that is integrated directly into the existing coating process. No additional process step is required. The solution is precisely tailored to KSK processes and is not publicly named to protect proprietary know-how.
- Chemical PP activation using a special primer
- Seamless integration into the existing coating process
- No additional process step required
- No investment in new plant equipment required
- Process control suitable for OEM approval
Results
- Significantly improved adhesion on PP components
- Reproducible results across the entire production run
- Robust to different PP blends
- Successfully in use on several production lines in series production
- Increased process reliability without additional investment
